Fast Facts About Our Author
Sandra has two children: Scott and Holly; and four grandchildren--Allison, Jacob, Piper and Ryleigh.
She also has a cat named Beau. He’s her current cat but there is always a cat to curl up next to her while she’s writing. Or bug her to take a break and play.
Her entire house is where she writes because she works on a laptop. All she needs is a place to put her feet up—and room for Beau to curl up.
She loves animals of all kinds and writes about lots of animals. It gives her an excuse to study them—when possible, spend time in the wild with them. But ask her about her experience with the boa constrictor.
She also loves to paint and so there are pictures she has painted on most walls—many of animals; some of past pet cats.
Take a look at some other books she wrote that you may recognize:
ASSIGNMENT: After reading a portion of the book, What if You Could Sniff Like a Shark? by Sandra Markle (click on title to view story), think of a question you would want to ask her. Virtual students may email questions to [email protected] with your name and teacher. You might hear your question asked during our virtual visit November 3, 10:30-11:00. If our virtual students are not able to join due to connectivity issues, we will record the visit (with author permission)and share it with our virtual students.
OPTIONAL ACTIVITY (Complete example below directions.)
Students in classrooms I visit this week will receive a non-fiction book about different animals. (You can go to the OES eBooks on the library website to read one if you do not have one at home.) Once you find a fact in your book you want to use, you can stop reading and turn to the Writer's Journal section of your Reader's Notebook (pg 115). Write the fact first, then write this prompt and add a couple of sentences explaining what you would do if you had this animal's super power:
If I could ___________________________like a _______________________, I would....
EXAMPLE
An eagle's vision is so sharp it can spot a rabbit from a mile away! If I could see like an eagle, I would stay on the balcony of the highest beach condo and watch for sharks, jelly fish, and other dangerous sea life. I would warn people with an alarm. I would also watch for swimmer's safety like a life guard. Nobody would be in danger on my eagle-eyed watch!
