Beautiful Book Covers
Responsibility to the book
A book cover’s job is to communicate both what the book is about and what the book is like. The text and graphics on the cover deliver the first impression. A cover’s imagery can establish character, setting, and plot. A cover’s style can suggest tone and mood. Scroll through the covers that are great examples of covers that let you get an idea of what the story will be about from the cover.

The covers below have some elements that work, and some that do not. We will discuss as we go through slides. The last image is third grade book covers from years past. Which row of books do you think did the best job of helping the reader know what was in the story? Why?
After going through the slides, watch the three videos by a book cover artist who had his artwork on McDonald's Happy Meals!
Third graders drew a cover for a book I am making about our Thanksgiving Celebration, and 4th/5th graders helped pick the winning cover.
If you are a virtual student, think of an event you participated in and draw a cover for that story without writing the actual story.
Bonus! You can draw the turkey at the bottom with the artist if you want to get your art on.
